International Society of Nurses in Genetics
There is a new national policy effort being coordinated by the Genome Center to
push for legislation to protect individuals from genetic discrimination. To proceed with these
efforts, they are requesting information about individuals or families denied employment or
health insurance opportunities based on genetic predisposition information. In addition, they
are seeking information about individuals whose fears of such discrimination have affected major
life decisions, such as participation in research studies, or sharing information with other
family members or health care providers, or other potential major decisions. Kathy Hudson, PhD,
the Assistant Director for Policy Coordination at NHGRI is coordinating this effort, and can be
contacted directly by patients, or by you detailing the discrimination, or fear of
discrimination's impact. Her e-mail is
kh93v@nih.gov
This is an important opportunity for us all to get involved in this national effort, and think
about who may be able to present a compelling case.
Kathy Hudson would like to personally speak to the individual who has experienced discrimination,
and ask them to possibly appear at a national gathering to discuss it. Kathy will be able to
provide the individual with more specific information when she speaks with them. Even if
appearing in public is not a welcome opportunity, assembling the stories is extremely important
right now.
